Seasonal Notes

Costa Rica is a year-round destination, with each season offering unique experiences depending on what you seek—whether it's sun-soaked beaches or lush rainforests in their full vibrant glory.

Dry Season (December to April):

This is considered the high season for tourism in Costa Rica, especially on the Pacific coast. Expect sunny, warm weather, perfect for beach activities and outdoor adventures. It’s the ideal time to explore national parks, visit volcanic regions, and enjoy the wildlife in its dry-season habitats. The Central Valley and most coastal areas experience pleasant temperatures, though some areas like the Caribbean may still see occasional rainfall.

Green Season (May to November):

During the rainy season, Costa Rica turns lush and green, which is why it’s often called the Green Season. Although rains are more frequent in the afternoon and evening, mornings are typically clear and perfect for outdoor activities. The green season is an excellent time for those looking to experience Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity, as this period marks the peak of plant growth and animal activity. The Caribbean coast tends to receive rain throughout the year but remains fairly pleasant. Additionally, fewer tourists mean more relaxed travel conditions.

Day 7 Arenal Volcano - Maleku Indigenous Reserve Tour

Today, you will visit the Maleku Indigenous Reserve in Costa Rica's northern region. Here, you'll have an incredible, immersive, and informative experience learning about the culture and traditions of the Maleku people. This reserve spans 2,993 hectares and is home to approximately 1,000 residents, most of whom speak the Maleku Jaica dialect. It includes three villages: Palenques Margarita, Tonjibe, and El Sol.

Your tour begins at 8:00 AM in La Fortuna, with a scenic one-hour drive through the northern plains to Palenque Margarita. (A 'palenque' is an ancestral-style village or communal structure, where families live and cultural traditions are preserved for indigenous communities. Historically, palenques were built using natural materials like wood, palm leaves, and mud.)

Upon arrival, you'll receive a warm welcome with a traditional cocktail and an introduction to the historical and socioeconomic aspects of Maleku culture.

Then, you'll go for a village walk that will take you through ancient palenque structures, and introduce you to contemporary crafts, cocoa farming, and the production of traditional attire. Back at the main palenque, you'll witness Maleku rituals, including traditional dances and indigenous music, with an opportunity to participate if you wish. The experience concludes with a delicious Costa Rican lunch, Mafuriseka—a dish of steamed fish wrapped in banana leaves, fresh vegetables, and fruit juice.

On Sky Walk, you can admire the natural beauty from the ground along our trails, or discover a whole new world by crossing the hanging bridges, offering panoramic views of the forest canopy and access to an entirely different ecosystem high above the trees.

Throughout the tour, a naturalist guide will point out intriguing plant and animal life, ensuring you don’t miss the fascinating details this forest has to offer. Please note that the trails include some uneven surfaces, as well as ascents and descents.
